The Benefits of Offering Nāga Treasure Vases

The offering of Nāga Treasure Vases (Lu Bum) is a profound and auspicious practice within the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Treasure vases are specially prepared and blessed, and are offered into bodies of water as an offering to the Nāgas (Lu) and other beings dwelling within the water and surrounding environment.

Through this practice, we aspire to:

• Pacify obstacles and purify karmic obscurations: Making offerings to the Nāgas helps pacify disturbances and unfavorable conditions, while creating auspicious causes and conditions for health, prosperity, harmony, and the flourishing of Dharma practice.
• Restore harmony within the natural environment: Nāga Treasure Vase offerings are traditionally associated with harmonizing the elements, benefiting water sources and beings dwelling within them, and pacifying disturbances in the natural environment.
• Accumulate merit: Making offerings with pure motivation is a powerful means of accumulating merit and creating favorable conditions for both our worldly well-being and our progress along the path to awakening.
• Dedicate merit for all sentient beings and world peace: The merit generated through this practice may be dedicated to the pacification of suffering, disease, conflict, and obstacles, and to the flourishing of peace, harmony, and auspicious conditions throughout the world.
